Ranging at a height of 5,109 meters above the sea level, Margherita peak is known as the highest summit on Rwenzori mountains – the highest mountains in Uganda and Congo and then the third highest in Africa after Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro of Tanzania. The mountains are protected by Rwenzori mountains national park that covers about 100,000ha in the western part of Uganda in the districts of Bundibugyo, Kabarole and Kasese district. The national park is among the most visited destinations in the country managed by Uganda wildlife Authority and among others include; Bwindi Impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park that host the endangered mountains gorillas that can only found in Uganda, Dr Congo’s Virunga national park and then Volcanoes national park of Rwanda.

Brief history about the park

Rwenzori mountains national park was established in 1991 and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to its outstanding natural beauty. In 1997 to 2001 June, it was then occupied the rebel militias and then from 1999 to 2004 it was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of world heritage in Danger due to the insecurity and lack of resources in the park.

Peaks on the Rwenzori mountains

The Rwenzori mountains comprise of 6 highest peaks or massifs at different points and these are; Mount Stanley at 5,109 meters, Mount Speke at 4890 meters, Mount Baker at 4843 meters, Mount Emin at 4798 meters, Mount Gessi at 4715 meters and then Mount Luigi Di Savoia at 4627 meters.

Of the massifs, Mount Stanley is the tallest with different peaks including the beautiful and glaciated Margherita peak. Conquering Margherita Peak, the highest summit of the mystic mountains, is a significant challenge that requires careful preparation, physical fitness, and the right mindset. It involves hiking through different vegetation zones at different altitudes – montane (1800-2500m), Bamboo zone (2500-3000m), and then Heather zone (3,000 – 4,000m).

Routes to use to the glaciated Margherita peaks

The Central circuit trails

This is the oldest, most used and simplest route to use to the beautiful margherita. It is managed by Rwenzori Mountaineering Services and its trek starts from Nyakalengijja just 22km from Kasese town. The route contains different campsites in the mountains where the trekkers have their healthy meals and also spend their precious nights.

As you hike through the route, you will watch a number of features including the rivers, lakes, waterfalls, valleys and various wildlife species like birds, reptiles and some primates as you pass through different park vegetation zones.

Kilembe route

Popularly known as the southern circuit, Kilembe route was opened in 2009 as an alternative route to be used by the Rwenzori mountaineers to reach to the peak. The route is known for its amazing and rich vegetation and animal species that offer a great mountaineering experience to the trekkers.

Owned by the Rwenzori trekking services, Kilembe trail offers different treks from 7-8 days, 9 days, 3 days and 5 days hike where you will sight the beautiful features like lakes, rivers, valleys, waterfalls and many others.
